Since he received the Lansdowne title after his premiership and when he was effectively retired from politics, should he not be at William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne? Timrollpickering 08:11, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)
This one I'd forgotten about - since no-one has posted can I suggest that if no-one objects in the next three days that I move the page? Timrollpickering 07:56, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I echo this question, five years on. It would be interesting to know the denomination, and when he professed membership of it. Anglo-Irish 'Ascendancy' families were usually Anglican or more precisely Church in Ireland (disestablished in 1868). I would raise a citation need if I could make it fit in the Infobox.Cloptonson (talk) 15:26, 6 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We say he was born William Fitzmaurice, but his father later changed the family surname to Petty in place of Fitzmaurice. So our man became William Petty. But we continue to refer to him as Fitzmaurice until he inherited the Earldom of Shelburne. Why? Is it because the family name was not changed until after he became earl?
Next, the article title is William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne. That makes sense in itself, but it clashes with the lede, where he's introduced as William Petty Fitzmaurice, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne. What's going on here? Wasn't the Fitzmaurice name dropped in favour of Petty? I could understand if Fitzmaurice was retained as a middle name, but not Petty, which was supposed to have become his new surname. I'm terribly confused by all this. -- Jack of Oz[pleasantries]08:51, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
