No mention of price manipulation?

It's often been said that Black Friday prices are offered at other times of the year and/or that regular prices are rapidly marked up so that they can be "brought down" during Black Friday. Take this BBC article on Which?'s findings for this year for example: [1]

Of course the counter-argument that immediately springs to mind is "of course they're going to be at the same price or cheaper given how many other sale events are held throughout the year", but surely some sort of mention is due?--Dvaderv2 (talk) 18:51, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I see that no movement has been made on this despite nearly a whole year having passed. “the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States” ≠ “the last Friday in November”

The introductory text currently states, first, that “Black Friday is a colloquial term for the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States”, then, that Black Friday occurs “on the last Friday in November”. These characterizations differ for years such that the 1^st of November is a Thursday (such as in 2018). For such a year, Thanksgiving occurs on the 22^nd of November (fourth Thursday), thus, “the Friday after Thanksgiving” is the 23^rd of November whereas “the last Friday in November” is the 30^th of November. This contradiction should be fixed (which I didn’t do because I don’t know which version is the right one). OlivierMiR (talk) 13:39, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OlivierMiR, this was just a good faith but mistaken IP edit and has been reverted. As you note, Black Friday is not always the last Friday in November. John M Baker (talk) 18:46, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Retail sales impact table numbers don't add up

If you multiply the number of shoppers by the average spent, the product is much higher than the numbers in the total spent column for the years before 2017 (2005-2014).

Are the numbers copied directly from the NRF data? Where can the data for these years be found? The surveys are also preliminary, i.e. they are asking people if they plan to shop on Black Friday, and how much they are planning to spend. Army / Navy game?

The New York Times just did an article on this and it apparently claims that the origin of the term was by police in Philadelphia but that it was about the Army/Navy game played on Saturday after Thanksgiving. This does not seem logical, since Saturday traffic wouldn’t affect Friday.

Also there’s a missing opening quotation mark in the following sentence:

I was going to the source to see about correcting it but it requires registration. Maybe someone else would be willing to do it.
